My Story

“Every artist was an amateur first.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

I am a self taught artist living in East Lothian, Scotland and took up painting after receiving a watercolour paint set for my 21st birthday in 1991. I dabbled in landscapes before my family and career as an Early Years teacher took over. In 2018 I developed a life changing illness which has left me virtually housebound.  After being medically retired then shielded due to Coronavirus, I started painting again in an attempt to salvage my mental health!

“There is no must in art because art is free.” Wassily Kadinsky

I began by painting land and seascapes and creating portraits of pets for friends and neighbours. I then began drawing and painting portraits and trying a variety of mediums. I read books and searched the internet, taking influence from and number of local and internationally renowned artists where I stumbled across the legend that is Bob Ross who summed up why I paint. “It’s so important to do something every day that will make you happy.”

I am interested in nature and in particular, the sky - the shapes and colours of the clouds as the sunlight throws its light around. As an Early Years teacher I used the outdoors as a valuable teaching tool to engage children in learning through nature. I am now using this influence to inspire my artwork. I am also developing a bit of a 'niche' for painting washing lines, and have had a number of commissions to paint other people's laundry!
